Course Status
The Ocean Course

Aerification went very well and we are now in the healing process. It normally takes a couple of weeks at best before everything settles back down and heals over from the aerification. We are seeing a good response on the green surfaces for just being one week out from aerification.
Some sod work will begin during the week of June 9th where there are several areas that will be repaired and re-sodded. The approach on #4 green will have some extensive sod work done to it since it has not transitioned well and there is a mix of grass varieties in that area. There are some areas where transition coupled with some shade issues will take some extra work to get them to fill back in with grass. We should see a positive improvement in most of these areas over the next few weeks.
Aggressive weed control is currently under way in turf areas as well as the natural areas.

The Conservatory Course

We are starting to make some progress in all aspects of the course. The warm weather has finally kicked in the growth on the course and some of the areas where we got very aggressive with weed control this winter are beginning to heal over. As we still fight weeds on a constant basis because of the lack of available herbicides for Paspalum, the weed pressure has decreased somewhat over the past month. Sod work will begin on Thursday June 5th where we had some hog damage and also some areas that need some attention and repair.
The greens surfaces are starting to make a significant turn for the better. Over the past few weeks we have been trying a new philosophy with our growth retardants and it seems to be making a difference. The surfaces as of June 4th were stimping at 9’ 1” which is considerably better than what we have experienced over the past couple of months. The ball is rolling better across the surface and holding its line. After many conversations with superintendents that have been growing Platinum Paspalum in the southern part of the state, we are in line with what they are experiencing with this grass. It is not a fast putting surface during the summer months when growing conditions are optimal. A stimp reading of 8.5 to 9.5 are about the best anybody is doing with this grass. Knowing that, our goal is to provide a consistent surface throughout the course while still trying to tweak our programs to get the most out of this grass that we can. If we can continue to see improvement and possibly get just a little more speed out of them then we are heading in the right direction. There is no question that the greens are healthy with amount of grass and tightness of the surface. The transition from the green to the collar is very good and the collars, which are also Platinum Paspalum, are performing very well.
The golf course will be aerified during the week of June 16 through June 20. All tees, fairways, and greens will be aerified. It will be interesting to see how quickly the greens heal over with this grass.
